Know Truth or No Truth?
The topic of truth is something that many people do not think much about. This is unfortunate since the understanding of truth is critical to our life with God and our salvation. The Scriptures say many things about truth. It says that Jesus is the truth (John 14:6), it says we must worship him in truth (John 4:24), it says that God wants us to know the truth (1 Tim 2:4), and it says that the truth will set us free (John 8:32). Clearly the importance of truth can not be emphasized enough. When discussing the Catholic faith, it is critical to be able to explain the necessity of truth. Why? Because so many Christians do not understand the nature of truth. Many Christians operate their lives in a mode of indifference. In other words, these people would say, "You believe what you want to believe and I will believe what I want to believe." Yes, there are those non-Catholics who hold strongly that they know the truth. However, there are also those who don't really care. In either case, we need to make it known that since God is truth, then there can only be one truth. Two beliefs that oppose each other can not both be considered truth. For example, look at the belief in infant baptism. Either infant baptism is true and God's will or it is false and contrary to God's will. What is true for one believer must also be true for another believer. Truth is not a relative thing.
So why is this so important? Because the Catholic Church teaches the fullness of the truth. Although non-Catholic Christians embrace much of what is true (i.e., the divinity of Christ, the Trinity, the inspiration of the Bible, etc.), there are also many truths that they are missing. Things such as the authority of the Church, the Eucharist, and Purgatory are all true, yet non-Catholic Christians have chosen to ignore these truths. Sharing these truths with non-Catholics should not be thought of as imposing simply a 'religious' belief system. Rather, knowledge of these truths are critical to our relationship with God. The apostle John said that if we love God, we will keep his commandments (1 John 2:5). Furthermore, we are commission by Christ to proclaim the good news and teach everyone ALL of his ways (Matthew 28:20). So what are his commandments and what are his ways? These passages imply that there is a true set of beliefs that God has provided us and that he expects us to follow. Clearly, an attitude of indifference is an assault on the truth and contrary to the will of God. So the question is, do you believe there is no truth? Or do you know the truth that will set you free?
