In 1849 a group of German colonists camped on the north side of Cibolo Creek, about a mile west of the site of present Boerne. They called their new community Tusculum, after Cicero's home in ancient Rome. In 1852 Gustav Theissen and John James laid out the townsite and changed the name to Boerne in honor of Ludwig Boerne, a German poet and publicist. In spite of the influx of different ethnic groups, the German cultural tradition has dominated the community in many ways. The Boerne Gesangverein, or singing society, established in 1860, was an important social and recreational organization until it disbanded in 1977; German community organizations still active included the Boerne Schuetzen Verein (shooting club), formed in 1864, and the Boerne Village Band, which was formed about the same time as the singing society. Boerne also holds the annual Berges Fest.
Boerne is located 16 miles north of San Antonio in Central Texas along the Cibolo Creek and eight miles south of the Guadalupe River. Highways serving Boerne include Interstate 10, US 87, and State Highway 46. Boerne lies in the beautiful Edwards Plateau, creating the dramatic hills and environmental features which characterize the area.
Cibolo Nature Center. This 65-acre inner-city greenbelt with four separate and distinct ecosystems, includes two miles of walking trails, estuary and a year-round offering of environmental awareness programs.
Numerous charming restaurants are available nearby. Visit Boerne at http://www.ci.boerne.tx.us/.

The German word, "VOLKSSPORTS," translates literally to "people's sports" and describes NON-COMPETITIVE WALKING, BICYCLING, and SWIMMING events having very lenient time limits.
Member Clubs of the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV) and the American Volkssport Association (AVA) organize events throughout the year. Anyone may participate. These events provide participants the benefit of outdoor activity without excessive physical demands.
The Randolph Roadrunners meet on the first Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. each month to plan events. Guest speakers discuss topics related to our sport and our lifestyle. The Golden Corral Restaurant on Pat Booker Rd. in Universal City hosts the Club and visitors are always welcome.
