MIDI
stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Standard MIDI files are stored
in a format agreed on by the MMA (MIDI
Manufacturers' Assn.)
MIDI files, unlike audio or wave files, do
not contain any sound or play back musical notes.
They consist of a series of messages or
events that contain the timings, volume, pitch and channel
designation of a single note or MIDI
event. A MIDI event can be used to control effects such
as reverb, vibrato, sustain, as well as
the instrument assignment used to play back MIDI notes
on a given port and channel. All of these
events are interpreted by your sound card and converted
into sound to produce the playback.
Realaudio
is real music recorded in wave then converted into Realaudio .ra using the RA Encoder.
A six minute song uses about 20 mb of hard
disk space when recorded in wave but when
converted to RA it becomes about 700 kb
without any quality loss, now using the ram method you
can listen to RA while downloading which
makes it instant play.
