Since 9/11/2001 travellers have come under increased scrutiny, at least in the United States.Until that time security check points in U.S. airports were very lax. That's all changed.
Security & check-in
U.S. airport security, especially during check-in, is approaching the levels known in Europe for many years. It takes longer for a more thourough check, so arrive at the airport in plenty of time to go through the check-in and screening process. In the United States, allow 1½ hours for domestic flights and 2½ hours for international flights. In many foreign airports, the time estimates may be longer.
No jokes
Security is not a joking matter! Do not make jokes about weapons, hijacking, terrorism, or anything related to them. An unthinking remark could ruin your trip. Put your brain in gear before engaging your mouth.
Laptops
If you will be travelling with a laptop computer, there are extra precautions you should take. 1.) Only take the files and peripherals you absolutely need during the trip; 2.) Be prepared to turn it on for security officers; 3.) Watch out for theives. The typical scenario has one thief go through security and wait. The second thief watches for a traveller with a laptop. As soon as the laptop goes on the security check point's conveyor belt, thief number two creates a distraction. As the traveller turns to the distraction, thief number one grabs the laptop and flees.; 4.) Make sure you have the proper transformers and adapters.
