
TIME LINE
August 2000
1. Librarians and teachers introduce the Battle of the Books to 5thgrade
students.
2. Multiple copies of books are available for check out by 5th graders.
3. Additional copies are available at local public libraries.
4. Letters are sent home to 5th grade parents with information aboutthe
Battle of the Books.
September--October 2000
1. Questions written by librarians are due by September 1.
2. Librarians continue to encourage students to read all eight books.
3. Teachers may read books aloud to classes.
4. Optional homeroom team competition is encouraged, with 4th gradeclasses
as an audience.
5. Student-made questions are encouraged.
October 16-20, 2000
1. Teams will be selected on the basis of a written test which willbe
provided by the librarian at this time. The test will be held on Tuesday,
October 17, 2000.
2. School team members will be announced no later than October 20.
October 23-November 10, 2000
1. Team preparation for district competition occurs on each campus.
2. Competing with other teams via e-mail is a possibility.
3. Entire 5th grade continues to support and coach the five schoolteam
members.
Monday, November 13, 2000 -- The Game!
1. All eighteen elementary school teams will participate in the district
competition.
2. The event will be held at the Pat May Center from approximately9:00
to noon.
3. Refreshments will be provided for all teams.
4. Rules:
Each team will have a chance to answer 50 questions.5. Since competition is not emphasized, final scores will not be announced, but the top three teams may be recognized.
Each team will sit out of view of the other teams.
Each team captain, after conferring with other team members, indicatesthe answer by showing the correct title card to the judge/scorekeeper ateach table. This continues to be a silent competition/
