Technical Information

I use a Wisner 8x10 Technical Field camera. It's big, heavy (17 pounds) and beautiful, and it resembles the cameras used a hundred years ago. The size and the way it operates require the photographer to slow down and work at a more
thoughtful pace.

A key advantage to using such a camera is the negative size. It produces an 8x10 inch negative with excellent resolution and a long tonal range. I use Kodak Tri-X film and process it in Kodak HC110 developer. Prints are made by contact on Brilliant Bromide paper, grade 2 or 3. Since grade 1 Brilliant Bromide is not available, on the rare occasion I need grade 1, I use Ilford Galerie.

I prefer black and white because it has a special look to it, and because when I think of photography, I think of black and white. Once in a great while I'll expose a sheet of color transparency film during a portrait sitting, but I find I always prefer the black and white shots.
